Free Swimming for over 60's and under 16's
Wokingham Borough Council are offering free swimming to over 60’s and under 16’s from 1st January 2010 to 31st March 2011, subject to £2 registration fee.  Further details and an application form can be downloaded from: www.wokingham.gov.uk/leisure/sports/leisure-facilities/free-swimming

To register please bring proof of age (appropriate ID listed below) and a £2.00 registration fee to Twyford Library at the following times:
Monday 14th December 2009 from 3.00pm to 7.00pm
Friday 18th December 2009 from 10.30am to 6.00pm
 
Appropriate ID:
Under 16's: Birth Certificate, Passport
Over 60's: Bus Pass, Birth Certificate, Pension Letter

Seasonal Flu - Protect Yourself and Others
The Department of Health have asked the Twyford Village Partnership to pass on this information:

Free vaccinations against seasonal flu are available for people aged 65 and over and for adults and children aged 6 months to 65 years in certain risk categories from October 2009.
 
Amid all the publicity surrounding swine flu, it is important not to under estimate the impact of seasonal flu. Every year it accounts for approximately 8,000 deaths. It can bring on serious complications for people in “at risk” groups and lead to other serious illnesses such as pneumonia. In the average winter, up to 15% of the population will be affected. All people aged 65 and over qualify for the free annual seasonal flu jab, and in addition adults and children aged six months to 65 years with the following conditions should also contact their GP for a free seasonal flu jab:
 
- a heart problem
- a chest complaint or breathing difficulties including, bronchitis, emphysema
- a kidney disease
- lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment)
- a liver disease
- had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- diabetes
- a neurological condition e.g. multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy
- a problem with, or removal of, their spleen e.g. sickle cell disease.
 
The jab can never offer 100% protection from seasonal flu, but does have a success rate of between 70 and 80% while others are more likely to get milder symptoms. Don’t forget, the seasonal flu jab does not protect against swine flu.
 
Patients with seasonal flu typically have a fever or a high temperature (over 38°C / 100.4°F) and two or more of the following symptoms:
- unusual tiredness
- headache
- runny nose
- sore throat
- shortness of breath or cough
- loss of appetite
- aching muscles
- diarrhoea and/or vomiting
 
In those circumstances you should stay at home, keep warm and rest, let a member of your family or friend know that you are ill, drink plenty of liquids and eat what you can. If you are in an at risk group or your symptoms get worse and you have chest pains or experience shortness of breath, you should contact your GP.

Parish Plan Process on Target
At a recent Twyford Village Partnership committee meeting, Sue Goddard presented a progress report showing that we are well on target to achieve publication of the Twyford Parish Plan by spring 2010.
We will shortly be advertising for people to attend action group meetings to assist with the prioritisation of all the action points that have arisen from the questionnaire and focus group responses. Look out for the e-mail newsletter that should be arriving in your Inbox soon!

Party in the Park - Skate '08
A fun-packed afternoon that was enjoyed by everyone who came, as the sun shone down on our new Skate Park and Ball Court! Thank you to the Reading Rockets who spent a lot of time with us and generated a lot of enthusiasm for basketball, particularly amongst the children. Thanks also to Andrea from the Sports Development Unit for getting us fired-up about netball! Delicious!
The weather was kind to us and our customers were able to spill out onto the patio for the Community Café event on 5th July. Christian and Melanie did us proud with a delicious array of cakes and scones, and thanks also go to Geoff for his washing-up skills! It was great to see Age Concern, Feed the Children and the Heart Foundation who also came and ran stalls. Thank you to all our customers for the lovely comments, we hope to see you all again for the next one - whenever that may be!

Community Café - Saturday July 5th
Come along for a cup of tea and a slice of cake, or indulge in an afternoon cream tea from 2-5pm at Loddon Hall, overlooking the playing field. We are delighted to welcome members of the Twyford & Ruscombe Horticultural Association selling their home-grown produce, plus Age Concern will have some clothes rails to raise money in support of their invaluable local service. Join a group - have your say!
Thank you to everyone who attended our meeting on June 19th, we were delighted with the response and particularly pleased to have made the next steps in the Parish Plan process. By forming the working groups to dig deeper into the local issues around the economy, the environment, traffic and travel and social issues we can really start to explore what makes Twyford tick. Of course, to make this count we need community involvement - Twyford needs you! Please get in touch tvp@live.co.uk and state your area of interest (e.g. train travel, housing developments, alternative energy sources etc) and the relevant working group will be in touch - we are looking to increase membership numbers in all the working groups. Join up and have your say!
