Twyford Library Campaign

Stephen Conway, our Borough Councillor for Twyford, has been at the forefront of the long-standing local campaign to provide Twyford with a new library. The focus of efforts over the last two years was the vacant site of the J W Greens pub in the centre of Twyford. Stephen is now re-launching the library campaign with the formation of a new working group under the umbrella of Twyford Village Partnership called Friends of Twyford Library.

Stephen reports:

I submitted a petition before Easter to Wokingham Borough Council’s chief executive, signed by more than 800 local residents, calling for Wokingham Borough Council to honour its long-standing commitment to provide a new library in Twyford. It was marvellous to be able to present such a substantial petition (the largest I can remember from Twyford to the council) and I should like to thanks all those who signed it, and the local shops that helped to promote the petition.

The council’s chief executive, who is new to the post, expressed more than polite interest in the subject, and seemed genuinely keen to find a way of providing the new library that is so much wanted by our community. I was much encouraged by her response.
I have also spoken with the acting head of library services about the petition, and will be meeting in the near future with him and the councillor responsible for libraries to discuss possible ways forward.

Meanwhile, the Twyford Village Partnership has set up a Friends of Twyford Library group, which will have its first meeting on 21 April. To find out more or to join Friends of Twyford Library please e-mail us at: tvp@live.co.uk
